Welcome to the Woolen Mill Studio website. The site is named after a store my grandparents owned called the Woolen Mill Store (click on the 'History' icon above for more information).
The site started out as a way to share my photography (still my focus) and from it a secondary interest developed, something that I would never have dreamed of - to write. Don't think I haven't wished I'd paid better attention in English class, particularly grammar.
Photography and more recently photo editing is something I have enjoyed through the years. I like to capture images that depict homespun simplicity, hard work, front porch pick'n, and in general life in the late 1800's. A particular subject of interest are the old wood barns (check out The Gallery for some of my barn pic's).
Most of my early efforts were self taught. About five years back, I completed a course in Digital Photography, a good back-to-the-basics of photography and photo editing not to mention an opportunity to work with the new Mac computers and Epson wide format printers. I think this may have been the first class I've taken where my "creative imagination" didn't spark a parent/teacher meeting. I have enjoyed continued education in areas of special interest, portrait photography and my newly discovered HDR photography.
Throughout the site there are references to the 'Editor-in-Chief of this Outfit' which affectionately refers to my wife (she keeps the really stupid stuff off this site). My son says I have a story for everything so I try to put that to good use when I post the picture and narrative.
If I could sum up my efforts in one word it would be to depict 'Hope'. According to the Noah Webster 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language hope is defined as "a desire of some good, accompanied with at least a slight expectation of obtaining it, or a belief that it is obtainable". It goes on to define it as "confidence in a future event; the highest degree of well founded expectation of good; as a hope founded on God's gracious promises".
I hope you enjoy the pictures and stories
and that it brightens your day.
